Water and Air Quality Concerns Following East Palestine Train Derailment

Following the recent train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, there have been growing concerns regarding the water and air quality in Western Pennsylvania.

The Borough of Zelienople’s water is supplied by Beaver Falls Municipal Authority (BFMA). The source of our water, the Beaver River, and BFMA have not been directly affected by the train derailment, as our water is sourced beyond the affected area. In addition to routine testing, BFMA collects VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) source water samples weekly and is continuing to monitor for any changes. For updates regarding water quality, please visit www.bfwater.net.

Additionally, our region’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has remained at an acceptable level, but you can monitor the AQI by visiting www.airnow.gov. More information about air quality and AQI can be found at here.

Updates on the water and air quality of the region can also be found at  www.epa.gov.

Residents with questions or concerns may contact the Environmental Protection Agency’s East Palestine Train Derailment Hotline at 215-814-2400.
