Zelienople Memorial Skate Park

Construction vehicles broke ground on the Zelienople Memorial Skate Park July 8, 2019. The idea of building a skate park was already in the plans for the Zelienople Community Park when Seneca Valley High School student Trevor Barkley dedicated his senior project to helping to bring it to life. Trevor and two of his classmates, Elijah Lunsford and Sam Bucci, to whom the park is also dedicated to, died in a car accident before the project was finished. Geoffrey Gutzwiller is also honored through the skate park, as his father, Les, donated $10,000 for the construction of a skate park to the borough of Zelienople. Almost 10 years after the death of Trevor and his classmates, and thanks to years of fundraising, the skate park was under construction.

“Respect the Shred” is a campaign developed by a team of public relations students at Slippery Rock University that is focused on establishing respect for the Zelienople Memorial Skate Park by the whole of the skate community while generating awareness of basic skate park etiquette among skaters.

Zelienople’s strong sense of community allows for the formulation of a core group of skaters that will instill generational respect for the skate park within the local skate community and foundational knowledge of park etiquette for those who might be a little unfamiliar.

Through flyers, workshops, community events and social media, this campaign will spread awareness to skate park users and surrounding community members of the dos and don’ts of the skate park. Overall, “Respect the Shred” will build a healthier skate park environment and strengthen the Zelienople community.
